she builds a home around her love, furnishing it with sturdy brick walls and a smoking chimney and an oven that is always warm. where cinnamon and sugar freckles her cheeks, flushed by a lover’s sweet kiss. where the sun warms ripe tomatoes and the air buzzes with life. where she is safe and warm and tenderness and virtue.

the smell of fresh bread and jam permeated the small division of gyeongju, sk. a young couple quarrels in their room after handing off their young daughter to an auntie next door. barely able to walk, eun-chae babbles along to the auntie's musings. she takes her back home and eun-chae doesn't know much, but she knows that her mom's forehead is creased and her dad's face is red and she misses the auntie's bread.

they move to japan for her dad's job and it's all bright lights and sounds and eun-chae cries when they arrive. things don't get better. in fact, they get worse - her father is stressed and her mother is angry. they were never built to last, merely young lovers that fizzled out quicker than they thought. eun-chae is surrendered to the foster system with the request that her parentage be sealed.

she bounces from home to home, hoping to find somewhere that stuck, when she ends up placed with the kurosawa family, a stoic and respectable family with a son a few years older than eun-chae. their home is quiet, reserved. they teach her how to sit and speak and care for the house, and she finally feels as if she had stability, albeit their strict nature. she took solace in naoto, their son, who acts as her rock in a country that is not her own. the smell of fresh bread permeates the air once more as eun-chae and her brother work to make their house a home.

an incident forces their placademt to be disrupted, leading her to be adopted by a kindly older couple who owned a quaint antique shop. though she can hardly remember her birth parents, the familiar warmth and comfort of her new family's community envlops her like a hug and she embraces it as best she could. eun-chae's love for baking follows her to her new home, and soon enough, it's filled with warmth and pastries and most importantly, stability. she becomes fiercely protective of her adoptive younger sister while looking to her eldest adoptive brother as a mirror for naoto, someone to go to when she feels out of place in her own country of birth.

expectations are high and eun-chae becomes not only the perfect daughter, but the perfect friend, mother, woman. it's difficult. she feels like she has to be everything for everyone but she likes it that way. being useful. stable ground is finally in her grasp.

she likes her home, but eventually, it comes time for dependable little eun-chae to forge her own path, to live for herself. she moves to the big city of seoul for university, working at a cafe to pay the bills while she pursues a psychology degree. she comes home to a nice little apartment and facetimes her little sister every night. she goes for drinks with her work friends and studies with her school friends. she's not where she wants to be, but she's alright- or at least she thinks. she helps people and fills her day with them and she likes it well enough, but she tries not to dwell. live life in the present.

with adulthood comes love and loss and stupid mistakes and the pervasive question of: what does dependable little eun-chae do when she's finally all alone?
